Creative, sustainable and realistic solutions to poverty in Zanzibar

AmberResort 430Pennyroyal Gibraltar Limited has founded Best of Zanzibar, a division providing upliftment to the local community of Zanzibar through corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects and initiatives. It’s committed to improving the well-being of the community through sustainable community development and empowerment.   Coinciding with the mega resort and tropical community development of Zanzibar Amber Resort, Best of Zanzibar was created to give back and uplift first, before the development even began. A baseline research study was conducted in October 2016 in which 100 local households were selected at random and surveyed to provide a quantitative analysis on the prevalent needs of the community. Best of Zanzibar aims to address these problems with creative, sustainable and realistic solutions. The results identified health and hygiene as a primary concern. Consequently, in collaboration with the government and seven Health officers from the Department of Environmental Health at the University of Zanzibar (SUZA), the Health and Sanitation Education Program has commenced as the first CSR project. The Best of Zanzibar team has partnered with Mbuyu Tende Primary and Secondary School and Kijini Pre-Primary, and have taught 1 321 children and 27 teachers basic hygiene practices. AmberResort 435 Water goes hand-in-hand with health and sanitation and together with education, the project will provide the community with access to clean water. The new water line constructed by Pennyroyal Gibraltar Limited will service wash stations and latrine pits at the schools of Kijini and Mbuyu Tende and surrounding villages. A nutrition program is in the pipelines which will be rolled out and implemented at Kijini and Mbuyu Tende schools. These two schools have been selected by Best of Zanzibar as the neighbours of Zanzibar Amber Resort and will be positively impacted by the resort before, during and after the development and construction. Firstly, teachers need to be trained and therefore English-medium teacher training scholarships will be launched to qualify local school teachers. The Maths and English Tutoring program will better prepare them for a job in the hospitality industry with the resort set to provide over 1 500 jobs. Children in the schools will be equipped better for life and will be afforded the opportunity to travel and seek employment internationally with the skills learnt through the program. Higher learning engineering scholarships will also be available to secondary school students specifically chosen by Best of Zanzibar, to further develop their skills and set them up for an incredible career opportunity, taking what they’ve learnt to build a better future for themselves. Music plays a significant role in the culture of Zanzibar, which is why Pennyroyal will be developing the Siti Binti Saad Institute imminently, a music and arts academy. This will enable those with natural creativity to develop their talent in a way they would otherwise not have been able to. Empowering and inspiring the community through song and dance in their mother tongue and providing them with new opportunities. New public roads have already been built covering an area of 20.5kms. The road gives the public and villagers access to their community and serves as a road to the Zanzibar Amber Resort site. Electricity lines are also underway running through to the site and will be integrated into the community of Matemwe, providing schools and communities with electricity. All of which will significantly contribute to the development of the people and the improving their quality of life with a long-term solution. Ensuring the safety of the community as it grows and develops, is a soon-to-be built Police Station in Mbuyu Tende funded by Pennyroyal and in full partnership with the Government of Zanzibar. AmberResort 167 “We at Pennyroyal are focused on improving the life standards of the Matemwe community,” states Saleh Said, Director of Pennyroyal Gibraltar Limited. “In fact, furthermore, we are striving to eradicate poverty in Zanzibar through Best of Zanzibar and Zanzibar Amber Resort.
