Hayward’s Grand Safari Events and Expeditions is a name that is synonymous with eco-friendly elite big group safari camps. Preserving Africa’s heritage and exposing South Africa’s future leaders in commerce and industry to the true exotic beauty of their own back yard and the lessons that can be shared about ancient sustainable wisdom of its indigenous rural communities is the driving force of the company.

Uniquely, this luxury tented mobile hotel offers leading South African and international companies the exciting new opportunity of focusing their next big incentive travel trip or product launch into the undiscovered heart of rural South Africa – rather than the usual approach of blowing huge budgets on air charter and cross border scrambles to luxuriate on “exotic” island beaches which in affect support foreign economies instead of making a vital contribution to the future survival of rural communities within our own country.

The man behind the name is Peter Hayward a 5th generation South African who has managed to successfully blend safari event management and tourism with sustainable village revitalisation.

Taking the lead in motivating South African corporate groups to join him on life changing safari expeditions into the hinterland, Hayward has come a long way from his humble beginnings. In 1979 whilst still gold mining with Anglo American, he started out with only a few small ten man guest camps for friends and clients participating over weekends in hunting and fishing excursions.

By 1993 he launched the world’s first (proudly South African) grand tented mobile hotel – accommodating up to 200 guests in big 5 game reserves. Today Hayward’s is the only 5 star rated mobile tented-hotel camp on the continent (if not the world) setting a new international precedent for the big group tented-hotel concept. “One can’t really get more exotic and adventurous than a grand mobile tented safari,” says Hayward.

He added, “I have a great passion and deep love and respect for southern Africa and believe that this sub-continent region has at its fingertips enough leadership, wealth of knowledge and innovative know how to avoid duplicating crumbling western (G8) models and rather develop new viable economic and resource utilisation models that are unique to Africa and that will provide solutions of future sustainability for all. We cannot keep falling into the antiquated industrial age trap of “rape and plunder” – we are digging our own graves if this continues.”

Hayward’s camps have been the preferred setting for some of the most lavish events for VIP’s & celebrities from around the world; but always, no matter the event, each safari camp has always served as a bridge to activate vital communication between the visiting urban leaders and their learned rural land custodian counterparts.

These safaris are offered in the some of the most off the track regions of this sub-continent giving everyone from global business opinion leaders to celebrities a rare opportunity to be immersed in and inspired by the sustainable lifestyles of rural communities.

High on the “wanted list” and being demanded by international incoming groups is to take part in a variety of legacy building activities. Whether it’s simply planting fruit trees, starting a communal food garden, helping to build libraries, training centres, clinics or schools, this adds to the adventure and most guests rate it as an “enthralling experience”. A close-knit highly experienced team at Hayward’s helps to preselect a village and the collaborative philanthropic venture necessary based on the group’s budget and time restraints. Cancelling long haul charter flights to other countries usually provides more than enough budget to kick-start such a project.

“We are totally committed to acting as a bridge for both communities to come together and celebrate each other’s unique but equally important role in the future viability of South Africa“, says Hayward.

As with great explorers of past, the comfortable camp is usually set up near the village but within an adjoining nature reserve with an abundance of wildlife and adventure for a truly authentic safari experience where guests also can enjoy great safari pastimes such as clay pigeon shooting, long bow archery, fly fishing, falconry instruction, mountain biking, picnics, horse trails or enjoying traditional dancing around blazing camp fires and dine on mouth-watering local cuisine.

It is an experience that provides a chance to take part in something that will make a long-lasting difference in people’s lives and the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life as a reminder of the pleasure in the simple joys of life.

Finweek and Aurik partner on R2.5m entrepreneurship bursaries

Finweek, South Africa’s leading financial news publication has joined forces with business development and acceleration firm Aurik to promote entrepreneurship in South Africa.

They will be offering 10 bursaries – each valued at R250 000 – for promising Gauteng entrepreneurs who are serious about growing their businesses. These entrepreneurial bursaries will help fund the tools and skills needed for the business to develop and will also be focused on doubling its revenue over a two year period.

“I don’t believe that we as South Africans celebrate our entrepreneurs enough. If they are the answer to job creation and innovation, something we witness daily, then surely we should celebrate them,” says Aurik CEO Pavlo Phitidis.

Phitidis says while entrepreneurship remains a major creator of jobs in South Africa there needs to be more support systems in place for business magnates. “We have worked with well over 500 entrepreneurs, from those in start-up businesses to those generating turnovers of R100m plus and not once have we ever seen anyone do it alone. All had help and found the support they needed when they needed it, yet in this country we so often remain too proud to seek help when we need it.”

“What I like about this competition is that it is scalable and dynamic,” says Finweek editor Marc Ashton, explaining that while the initial phase of the competition is focused on Gauteng based entrepreneurs there are opportunities to expand to other regions.

The competition has a unique crowd-sourcing and fund raising element attached to it in the second six month period and will make use of social media to allow readers and competition to champion the businesses they are backing.

The progress of the finalists will be tracked through Finweek and regular feedback will be shared through the print, online and entrepreneur events.

For further details on the competition please visit – http://www.aurik.co.za/accelerators-campaign-nomination/ – or follow the competition by picking up your weekly edition of Finweek or visiting www.fintalk.co.za.

Cecilia Square, the innovative office building to be built next to Paarl Mall from early next year, now has a 100% owner. Wolf Edmayr, Managing Director of BKB Limited, recently signed the final paperwork to make his company the proud owner of this technology-intelligent environment-friendly development in the quintessential winelands town of Paarl.

Lazercor Developments initially planned to retain part-ownership of this A-grade office complex, but BKB soon indicated that they wanted to buy the entire office space of approximately 4 900 m2.

“We are expanding and simply had to find more space for our Western Cape office. When we received news of this development, we saw the investment potential and decided to buy the entire complex, rather than only the 20% we need at present,” Edmayr explains.
According to Edmayr the spaciousness and contemporary design were important factors, but the ideal location of these new offices played a key role in their decision to buy.

“Situated as it is next to the N1, this will be the ideal base from which to serve our business area, which stretches from the Western to the Southern Cape – to say nothing of the staff’s plans to make the most of their location right next to the Paarl Mall over lunch hours,” he smiles.
There were some other equally compelling reasons for BKB’s purchase, namely the advanced technology and environmental awareness inherent in the design. It is for this reason that Edmayr foresees no problem in renting out the remaining 80% of the office space.

“Our business philosophy is leaning towards becoming ‘greener’, and in that regard this development fits us like a glove – the design is aimed at achieving an international 4-star Green Star rating, which will make it the first green building of its calibre in Paarl. Ant then, of course, there is Cecilia Square’s attractive technology offering.”

Although ‘attractive’ is probably an understatement for this technology-intelligent development, which will feature a single managed high-speed IP backbone for services such as a fireproof data centre/server room, wired and wireless telephony system, VOIP access control and intercom system, state of the art surveillance system, dedicated high-speed internet access, business continuity and disaster recovery through 24-hour building systems management and maintenance, uninterruptible power supply for infrastructure and core network hosting.

Cecilia Square’s ‘green’ rating is based on its design, which is in line with international guidelines around the reduction of carbon footprint and minimal environmental impact. High quality building materials have also been specified for their ability to insulate and complement the energy-saving design of the building. Fittings such as lights that automatically dim or brighten, depending on ambient light, or air-conditioners that automatically switch off when no motion is detected for a certain period will further contribute towards keeping Cecilia Square’s electricity account – and carbon footprint – as low as possible. The technologically advanced design even takes into account the well-being of tenants, with advanced carbon dioxide monitoring and automatic adjustment of air quality.

“It makes so much sense – not only from the perspective of environmental awareness, but also practically, in terms of cost savings. The green design even makes provision for showers and bicycle parking areas – so maybe we should make it a rule that staff members should cycle to work, rather than drive!”, Edmayr teases.

BKB staff members are also looking forward to the move to Cecilia Square, which will probably take place some time during 2013. As one staff member puts it, “We spend a large part of our life at work – so if your environment is attractive and comfortable, it makes a huge difference to your productivity. And the views are something else!”

“I’m just glad they are keeping the old oak trees on the site – it will give the place a bit of a timeless feeling,” another adds.

Clients will not be impacted at all by BKB’s move – quite the reverse. Cecilia Square’s generous parking areas and easy access from the N1 will make it much easier for clients to visit the new offices… and even drop in at the neighbouring Paarl Mall along the way.

Mark Teuchert, a director of Lazercor Developments, is equally excited about this project. “We promised BKB that we’ll start construction early in 2012… and with this office building being our greenest development yet, we can’t wait to see the end result.”

It seems that office space in Paarl will never be quite the same again – and that other business owners may have to brace themselves for staff members badgering them to make the move to Cecilia Square.
